Class: Painting from Life (2 videos)
(Part of Drawing Fundamentals course in Digital Arts trac)Instructor: Ron Lemen
Teaches the basics of painting through use of gouache paints on canvas and digitally in Photoshop. The lesson starts with introducing the tools such as the palette, paint, and types of paintbrushes and how they are used. Color is shown as an integral part of realistic painting, using tints, tones, and hues to moderate the temperature of the painting. Both digitally and manually, painting starts with the same basics as drawing. First, you must do a simple pencil outline of your figure, using blocking to create correct proportions and shapes. Next, basic flat colors are laid onto the canvas as starting points for various layers. The darkest values are marked first so that areas of shadow are not overlooked. Opacity is manipulated so that layering of colors and temperatures produces the desired effect. Smaller brushes are used to add subtle detail. Glasses are added last.
